How schools prepare students for the real world?

As a learner we are human first, so we need to be at the right place to learn.  Traditionally we trusted the education system to help students to be successful in life. Sadly, we have become focussed on tests and started labelling students based on grades.  We are rapidly losing  the love for life long learning.

The GUILD International College is a college of possibilities, and we educate to the strengths of each student instead of focussing on percentile measurements based on standardised tests. We work hard to showcase what students and teachers can do when you trust the process and be engaged in learning that is authentic. We rely on the support of the people in our community to help us drive the message of focus on the process and not the grades. Teaching life skills can be vague so we need to focus on learning the skills needed to help our students find their passion,  purpose , confidence to build a better life for themselves.

We need to monitor how our students are doing and not how much they need to do. Pay closer attention to the way students learn instead of what they need to learn. We need all in a school community to be   inspirational, engaging, trusting to help students transition to independent living. Today we see how education is not developing students to be job ready and there is a knowledge gap. We still have a mindset that we should continue with the same way of delivering learning instead of reviewing how we are getting students ready for the future.

Frankly, we no longer have traditional jobs, so we need to teach students to be creative, take risks to be prepared and ready for the future. One good example is Uber who google-ized the streets across the world for a driver to be able to drive in any city instead of traditional cab drivers who had to learn and remember all the routes before. In summary we do a good job getting children ready for school, now we need to get them ready for life.  We need to be optimistic, free up the expectations and equip students with skills to meet the needs of the world. This I think can be the gateway to each student being the best that they can be and a valued member in the real world!
